Privacy Policy
SimpleTab is an independently-run app. Our only incentive is to build something you trust and keep using. We are free to use and may accept optional donations from users to support our development and operations. This policy explains plainly what data we collect, why, and how it's protected.
1. Who we are
SimpleTab ("we", "us", "our") is an expense sharing application available on iOS, Android, and the web at simpletab.app. SimpleTab is independently developed and operated in Canada.

2. What we collect
Account information
When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from Google. We store this in your SimpleTab account to identify you to your friends and group members.
Invites and friend connections
When you send a VIP invite or a friend request, we store the recipient's email address and link it to your account so we can deliver the invite, prevent duplicate sends, and credit you if it's accepted. The recipient sees your name and profile photo on the invite they receive. Friendships are consent‑based: the other person must accept your request before a connection is established. Your friend list is visible only to you.
Payment contact details (optional)
To enable one-tap settlement, you may optionally provide your Wealthsimple Cash tag and Interac e-Transfer email address. These are stored in your profile and shared only with members of groups you belong to, so they can send you payments. We never initiate or process payments on your behalf.
Expense data
When you add an expense, we store the description, amount, currency, category, date, participants, and how the division was calculated. This data is shared with all members of the group the expense belongs to.
Receipt images
If you use AI receipt scanning, your photo is uploaded to our servers, processed by Google's Gemini AI to extract line items and totals, and then stored in Google Cloud Storage. The image is linked to the expense and visible to other group members. You can delete an expense (and its receipt) at any time.
Device and usage information
We collect push notification tokens (to send you expense activity alerts) and basic crash/error logs to fix bugs. We do not run advertising analytics or track you across other apps or websites.
3. How we use your information
- To identify you and connect you with your friends and group members
- To display expenses, balances, and settlement calculations within your groups
- To process receipt photos through AI OCR and return parsed expense data to you
- To send push notifications about group activity (you can disable these in your device settings)
- To diagnose and fix bugs and performance issues
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not build profiles of you for any purpose outside of running SimpleTab.
4. Who we share your data with
Other SimpleTab users
Your name, profile photo, and (if provided) payment contact details are visible to members of groups you join. Expense data you create is visible to all members of the group it belongs to.
People you've sent a VIP invite or friend request to can see your name and profile photo on the invite they receive. Once a friend request is accepted, you and your friend can see each other's profile and any groups you are mutually members of.
Google Cloud Platform
SimpleTab is built on Google Cloud infrastructure. Your data is stored in Google Firestore and Google Cloud Storage. Receipt images are processed by the Gemini API via Google AI Studio. Google's data processing terms apply to these services. You can review Google's privacy practices at policies.google.com/privacy.
No other third parties
We do not use advertising networks, third-party analytics services, or data brokers. We do not share your data with any other companies.
5. Data storage and security
SimpleTab is hosted on Google Cloud infrastructure. Our primary data storage and processing occurs in Canadian data centers to ensure your data resides within Canada whenever possible. Your data is stored in secure, encrypted data centers.
All connections to SimpleTab are encrypted via HTTPS/TLS. Access to your data is protected by Firebase Authentication tokens that expire and are verified on every API request.
Receipt images in Google Cloud Storage are stored in private buckets, accessible only through authenticated API requests.
No security system is perfect. If you become aware of a security issue, please contact us at security@simpletab.app.
6. Your rights and choices
We comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.
Access and export
You can view all expense and group data you have access to directly within the app at any time.
Deletion
You can delete individual expenses from within the app. To delete your account and all associated data, contact us at privacy@simpletab.app and we will permanently remove your account, profile, and any data you created within 30 days.
Push notifications
You can disable push notifications at any time in your device's notification settings.
Payment contact details
Your Wealthsimple tag and Interac email are optional. You can remove them from your profile at any time in the app's settings.
VIP invites and friend connections
You can view the status of every VIP invite you've sent from the Friends tab. You can decline incoming friend requests, and remove existing friends from your profile at any time. If you want a pending invite removed from our records before it expires or is accepted, email privacy@simpletab.app.
7. Children's privacy
SimpleTab is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you through the app or by email. Continued use of SimpleTab after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
